What are the different materials available in CAD/CAM milling blocks?

Dental materials now offer versatile options suited to clinical needs. Choosing between glass ceramics, zirconia, and hybrid composites means assessing flexural strength, fracture toughness, and esthetics.

  • Ceramic blocks: Lithium disilicate glass ceramics, like Ivoclar's IPS e.max CAD, set the standard for strong, natural-looking anterior restorations. These blocks mill easily in their pre-crystallized state and, after a short firing cycle, achieve final strength above 500 MPa. Newer glass ceramics, such as zirconia-reinforced options like CELTRA Duo and CEREC Tessera from Dentsply Sirona, offer even faster processing—some are ready in under ten minutes or can be polished and placed without firing—helping practices save chair time and improve workflows.
  • Zirconia blocks: CAD/CAM zirconia blocks offer top durability for posterior and implant-supported restorations. With flexural strength of 800-1200 MPa, modern zirconia blends strength and translucency for a natural look. Multi-layered blocks provide gradients of shade and translucency resembling natural teeth. Fast processing and single-visit workflows, as with Dentsply's CEREC blocks and KATANA Zirconia from Kuraray, improve efficiency. Zirconia's low fracture rate assures reliability and value.
  • Composite blocks: Composite and hybrid CAD/CAM blocks combine strength, natural esthetics, and a ceramic-based, polymer-reinforced matrix that mimics dentin flexibility. This absorbs chewing forces and protects the tooth—especially useful for implant-supported crowns. These blocks mill quickly, require no furnace, and polish to a lifelike shine, so restorations are ready quickly, saving chair time and keeping appointments on schedule.

How do you select the right restorative block material for each indication?

  • Start with a precise assessment of the clinical indication and patient needs to choose the best block material.
  • For inlays and onlays, glass ceramics provide excellent marginal fit, strong adhesive bonding, and an enamel-like finish that supports natural esthetics.
  • Lithium disilicate blocks excel for anterior crowns, delivering optimal translucency, natural fluorescence, and robust strength for delicate, realistic restorations.
  • Monolithic zirconia is well-suited for posterior crowns, especially in limited space or with bruxism, delivering strength and translucency for a balance of durability and esthetics.
  • Choosing the right material helps you balance function, esthetics, and capability, supporting positive outcomes and lasting patient satisfaction.

What shade and translucency options are available for CAD/CAM milling blocks?

Rely on accurate shade and translucency selection before milling to ensure esthetics in digital dentistry. Dental manufacturers offer CAD/CAM blocks in a wide range of VITA classical and 3D-Master shades. Go beyond color—understand translucency to effectively imitate natural teeth.

  • Low Translucency (LT): Best for covering discolored preparations, amalgam, or titanium abutments. LT blocks reflect more light, increasing value and brightness.
  • High Translucency (HT): Best suited for inlays, onlays, and anterior veneers where the restoration needs to integrate perfectly with the surrounding enamel, allowing the natural color of the underlying tooth to shine through.
  • Multi-layered (ML): These blocks move from higher opacity at the cervical margin to high translucency at the incisal edge. Popular for monolithic anterior zirconia crowns, they reduce post-milling staining and characterization time.
